Thoughts on Google’s new Page Speed Service

by Josh Fraser on July 29, 2011

Today Google announced a new product called Page Speed Service. Their announcement prompted a lot of attention and quickly filled my inbox with emails asking what their launch means for Torbit.

I’ve been a long time fan of Google. We have many friends at Google and have built strong relationships within their various performance teams. Steve Souders, in particular, has been a big supporter of our work and we’ve collaborated with various members of the Page Speed team along the way. I even wrote the blog post on TechCrunch about their last product launch.

The product they announced today was a natural progression for the Page Speed team, and we congratulate them on their launch. We obviously agree that offering performance in the cloud is an excellent idea!

We think it’s a nice offering that will provide a starting point for smaller sites to get some basic performance optimizations. Of course, Google is only brushing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the performance optimizations that are available. For those seeking more advanced optimizations, Torbit will continue to be a more compelling offering. Torbit already provides a long list of additional optimizations that Google doesn’t — things like WebP support, JavaScript deferral and localStorage filters along with browser-specific and mobile-specific optimizations. Torbit’s product also includes a few important features that Google’s Site Speed Service is missing. With Torbit, we allow you to host your site on your registered domain (domain.com instead of www.domain.com) which is an important factor for many sites. We also have SSL support which is critical for many companies especially those in ecommerce.

Torbit offers both email and phone support to our customers. Our support number is 888.885.3836. You can call it 24 hours a day. If you’re putting your site in the hands of another company, you want to know they’ll be there when you need help.

We are excited to welcome a new player into this space. It validates our market like never before. We believe competition is good as it drives us all to be better.
